Sex Determination: How Worms Count to Two
نویسندگان
چکیده
A century ago, Bridges proposed that male genes on the autosomes and female genes on the X chromosome compete to determine sexual identity. New genetic and molecular studies establish Caenorhabditis elegans as the first animal known to use this mechanism.

Vive la différence: males vs females in flies vs worms.
For 600 million years, the two best-understood metazoan species, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, have developed independent strategies for solving a biological problem faced by essentially all metazoans: how to generate two sexes in the proper proportions. The genetic program for sexual dimorphism has been a major focus of research in these two organis...

Related species share genetic and developmental backgrounds. Therefore, separate-sex species that share recent common ancestors with hermaphroditic species may have hidden genetic variation for sex determination that causes some level of lability of expression of gender. Worms of the polychaete species Ophryotrocha labronica have separate, dimorphic sexes and their ancestor was hermaphroditic. ...
متن کاملSex-Specific Aging in Flies, Worms, and Missing Great-Granddads
Two recent studies identify how sex-specific pheromonal factors in flies and worms alter lifespan through metabolic pathways that are shared with mammals. Sex differences in human lifespans imply nonautonomous effects modulated by sex-specific gene-environment interactions that could still include pheromonal mechanisms.
متن کاملSex in the '90s
The origin and nature of the differences between the sexes is likely to have been a subject of debate since prehistory. Many theories proposed by the ancient philosophers were interesting, if inaccurate (the “heat” of lovemaking does not determine maleness, as proposed by Aristotle, but the temperature of embryonic development is indeed important for some species). The debate began to find a go...
متن کاملDevelopment of sexual dimorphism in the Drosophila testis
The creation of sexual dimorphism in the gonads is essential for producing the male and female gametes required for sexual reproduction. Sexual development of the gonads involves both somatic cells and germ cells, which often undergo sex determination by different mechanisms. While many sex-specific characteristics evolve rapidly and are very different between animal species, gonad function and...
